kbbteamfullsizeWho is Kauai Beach Boys?

Steeped in the tradition of 50’s and 60’s, the Kauai Beach Boys of today are caretakers of a golden era gone by. The original Kalapaki Beach Boy, Percy Kinimaka , surfed, paddled, played music and shared his aloha on the very same beach we call home today. Though there will never be another Percy Kinimaka, his legacy and that of all the Hawaiian Beach Boys are the foundation of everything we do.
Under the same ownership since 1983, Kauai Beach Boys is Kauai’s original surf school and beach concession. We are a family of water enthusiasts eager to share our passion for the ocean. We all share a deep respect for water, an unadulterated love for surfing and paddling, and pride in our chosen profession.
Kauai Beach Boys is also Kauai’s most complete ocean fun headquarters. With stand up paddling, surfing, canoe paddling, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, body boarding, and just plain beach bumming… if its at the beach we’ve got you covered. And with two locations, Kalapaki Beach and Poipu Beach, the surf is always up!

Marlo was my instructor. He was OUTSTANDING!!! We talked about balance on the board (and in life). Before we got in the water and even got into the basic mechanics of paddling and standing up on the board, he imparted to me his knowledge of observing how the waves were breaking. It was important to have a game plan…To read the markers of the water…how to and where to enter the water. When we went out onto the water…It was magic! I got up consistently and caught wave after wave. Kalapaki Beach is beginner-friendly for neophyte surfers. One of the best highlights of my life. Take Marlo’s class if you can. Or from the other instructors…Of the ones that were there, they were accommodating and friendly. Kalapaki Beach is a slice of heaven! I’ll be back!

I met Percy Kanimaka back in 1981 and again in 1983 when my wife and daughter stayed at the Kauaii Surf Resor in those summers. He was the beach captain and headed up the scuba, and the outrigger canoe rides . He even took my wife and I snorkeling in some of Leleos favorite spots. I traded a watercolor painting of a outrigger canoe for one of Percy’s palm tree frond hats. He was a lovable honorable good man. I was privileged to know him.

Percy was a gentleman indeed. I started working at Kalapaki in 1982 for the sailing concession of the Kauai Surf Hotel. I still work at Kalapaki with Kauai Beach Boys. We’ve had two red surfing canoes built and named “Leleo” and “Kaupena”. Kaupena is Percy’s son and still runs the security department for the property that is now Marriott. Kauai Surf! Those were the days! ALOHA and A HUI HOU!
